Even though it is still cold outside, now is the time to start thinking about getting your outdoor space ready for summer. The last thing you want to do is miss out on some of those gorgeous sunny days that are only a few months away because you are still building your outdoor deck.

The time to act is now! The question is, do you want to be sat outside on a deck or a patio? Is there even that much of a difference? Truth be told, there is a huge difference between decks and patios.

Here are our top reasons why you should get a deck instead of a patio. Decks really are much better for soaking up the sun and enjoying a cold beverage.

1. They are two totally different experiences

Decks are a wonderful addition to any home, and a deck is effectively an outdoor extension of your indoor living space. The vast majority of decks will be built at the same level as your doorway. This makes it so comfortable to easily step out onto your wonderful deck. This is especially handy if you, or anyone in your household has any difficulty with steps.

Stepping out onto a patio can be a less enjoyable experience. As patios are built directly on the ground level of your property, it can be uneven. To fix this problem, it is quite easy to have the ground levelled out. However, it is much more straightforward to build a flat deck at the level it needs to be!

2. Maintenance

Patios look great and perfect after they are installed, well at least for the first week. You would be amazed at exactly how quickly weeds and mildew can start to build up on the surface of your patio. To maintain a clean look, you’re going to have to set aside the time to look after the surface. You’re also going to need to watch out for any pavers that might rise up as the temperature changes. These could present tripping hazards.

Now decks do require some maintenance, but it is pretty minimal compared to the patio maintenance and ongoing worry about cracks forming. Assuming that your deck is built by an experienced professional you the expansion and contraction of the materials as the seasons change will not have any effect on the deck. The same cannot be said for concrete, or the ground that a patio is built on.

3. Decks just look better

There is no better feeling than inviting your friends and family over to your place and showing them to your beautiful deck. Aesthetics is very important when you are planning an outdoor space. Decks add a level of architectural interest to any property.

With many advancements in the materials that are available for your deck’s construction, you will be able to have a deck built to any size shape and specifications that you can dream up.

4. Safety

Decks are fenced in, so when you have small children playing on a deck, you will be able to simply place a child gate at the exit and you have a large playpen for them to explore safely. This is much more secure than a patio as a child could wander off if you take your eyes off them for just a second. The same can be said for pets, you will be able to keep them on, or maybe more importantly, off your deck. This can be very useful if you have lots of company over and want the dog to also enjoy the great weather we’re all looking forward to.
